“What?!?! They’ve broken through the coastal defenses? This means disaster for our invasion! Bah!” -Andross, calmly responding to the reports of Star Fox’s attacks
Chapter 5 0551, local time, central Corneria City The remaining Venomian fighters and transports in Corneria City were getting really nervous. They had all heard of Star Fox before, but they didn’t realize just how skilled they were. Most regarded them as a mere third-party mercenary unit. Boy, did they ever regret that now. All Venomian pilots had heard the reports of “…a four aircraft squadron by the name of ‘Star Fox’ destroying all Venomian coastal defenses, air, land, and sea…,” in under five minutes. That was unheard of! The only other squadron that the Venomians knew of that could pull off stunts like that was Star Wolf, a Venomian loyal mercenary group. And even Star Wolf would have a hard time doing what Star Fox just did. Needless to say, the Venomian pilots were very uneasy, especially the fighters guarding the canyon entrance to Corneria City: “Hound squadron leader calling all Venomian fighter units. Request heavy back-up. Radar shows four Arwing class fighters screaming towards our location. Over,” called out Darin McDonnel, the leader of Hound Squadron. Hound Squad was a Venomian Interceptor Squadron, flying Borzoi Mk. I fighters. Its seven members were fairly experienced pilots, above average for Venom. They were ordered to defend the canyon entrance to the capital city at all costs. Unfortunately for them, Star Fox chose to enter the city from the canyon. Three lone fighters joined up with Hound Squad, because their squadron had been destroyed by early Cornerian defenses. “It’s no use, Darin. Everyone has orders. We just have to tough it out,” said the second in command of Hound Squadron. “You’re right. Bring the anti-air batteries on-line,” ordered Darin, but that order never got carried out. The blue and white Arwings of Star Fox streaked out of the canyon, with all lasers blazing. Fox took his Arwing low and took out the AAA turrets before they even went on-line. Falco single-handedly took out four of the Hound Squad’s ten fighters. The rest of the team destroyed the rest. “They did a great job of shutting down the city, but they sure weren’t ready for an aerial counter-strike!” said a giddy Falco. “You’re telling me. This is a turkey-shoot,” added Slippy, surprised at the ease in destroying the enemy fighters. “Don’t let your guard down; they may be setting up an ambush,” warned Peppy, who had experience in this field. “Peppy’s right, let’s take it to ‘em, but watch your six!” added Fox. The Arwings turned all Venomian defenses into scrap metal. Soon, the four had reached the center of the city, and there the defenses got a lot stronger. But the heavy fire that the Venomians were experiencing on Corneria was nothing compared to that on the VSS Chaotix, breaking orbit and turning towards Venom.
~~~~~~ 0555, local time, VSS Chaotix “Ensign! Flank speed to Venom. We have to get out of this battle before they turn their guns on us,” ordered Admiral Kaita to the officer commanding the engine room. “But sir, we still have aircraft down there!” came the response from the engine room. “This ship is worth more than any fighter left on that planet! Flank speed, now!!” re-affirmed Kaita, growing angrier by the minute. Adm. Kaita was growing irrational in his anger at failing to fulfill the mission given to him by Andross. He knew that he’d have an even bigger war when he returned to Venom to explain what happened to the Emperor himself. Kaita knew that bringing back a torn up flagship would make it worse. Better safe than sorry, he figured. Many Venomian pilots were wishing they could have the “safe” option about this time, too. What Kaita knew that most others had forgotten about was that Venom had planted two secret weapons on Corneria. One giant battle mech called “Granga” and one modified cruiser class Capital ship. The cruiser was Kaita’s best hope because it had Anti-Air missiles, was easily stronger than any fighter squadron, and could carry 100 extra crew members. If the two weapons succeeded in destroying Star Fox, they could carry all the shot down Venomian pilots back to Venom. Or that’s what Kaita hoped would happen.
~~~~~~ 0600, local time, Corneria City Star Fox had plowed through defenses in record time, up until this point. Defenses had gotten stronger, and the four pilots now encountered large, mech-like units that were tearing down buildings. These were heavily armored, as it took many hyper laser shots to destroy them. “Hurry! They’re getting the towers!” screamed an over-excited Slippy through the radio. “Don’t scream, Slip, those are my ears over here,” snapped back Falco, who had three of these mechs under his belt already. During his attack on the mech, Falco didn’t notice the four remaining pilots of Venom’s last remaining pursuit squadron, Saber Squad. Their sleek Invader II fighters had decided to go with a bang, using any means necessary to take down a member of Star Fox. They got into position, and when the leader shouted “Banzai!!!” they launched their attack. “I could use some help here, Fox!” shouted Falco, unable to get the trained pilots off of his tail. “I got ‘em,” answered Fox, calmly unloading on the four Invader pilots. “Well, I guess I should be thankful,” answered the cocky pilot. “Take out the radar arrays,” interjected Peppy, noticing the radar dishes below. The pilots destroyed the radar, and the turrets just past the radar. When they reached the two mechs guarding the sea-side entrance to the other side of the city, they went up in flames too. Fox, knowing the Venomian tactics warned: “We are approaching the Strait of Corneria, keep your guards up.”
